Bethlehem Take A Peek At Casino Complex Proposal
Join Bethlehem Mayor John Callahan this week for a personal tour of the proposed BethWorks casino.
He'll be guiding the tour of the 96-square-foot, three-dimensional model that depicts the proposed slots casino, upscale shops, space for community organizations and the iconic blast furnaces of the former Bethlehem Steel Corp.
It's the same $200,000 prop that Sands BethWorks Gaming — which includes Nevada gambling company Las Vegas Sands — had used when making its case Friday before the state Gaming Control Board.
Callahan's tour will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today and Wednesday in the lobby of City Hall, 10 E. Church St.
The model includes all the local partners that would be attracted to the site: the National Museum of Industrial History, SteelStax, Lehigh Valley PBS and Northampton Community College. Also on display will be oversized full-color illustrations of the slots parlor.
The project, if the state grants the developers one of the two available gaming licenses for a freestanding slot parlor, would be built on 126 acres of former Steel land on the city's South Side between the Minsi Trail and Fahy bridges.
Also making its case for a license at last week's hearing were Aztar Corp. in east Allentown and the Boyd Group for a site in Limerick Township, Montgomery County. The gaming board is expected to award licenses for stand-alone slots in December.
